Trash Free Texas: Basin-wide Community Engagement Strategies to Reduce Aquatic Debris

Houston-Galveston Area Council / North Central Texas Council of Governments

Kathy Janhsen / Tamara Cook

The North Central Texas Council of Governments, in partnership with the Houston-Galveston Area Council, will coordinate with local governments, industry, and other partner organizations across six river basins in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston regions to implement basin-wide community engagement strategies to reduce land-based aquatic debris. This project, to be funded by the U.S. EPA's Waterway Trash Reduction Grant in the Gulf, will implement trash prevention, community outreach and engagement, and trash reduction projects aimed at changing behaviors and business practices and reducing aquatic debris that drain to Galveston Bay and adjacent areas of the Gulf of Mexico. The project will serve as a model for other watersheds/basins in Texas to improve water quality, protect aquatic habitat, and improve community resilience. Project deliverables will be shared and can be used throughout Texas and the nation. Pending final award, project kickoff is anticipated by or before July 2020.
